Hello! I am Alison Ness. I was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. I’ve been married for over 6 years, and have over 20 nieces and nephews! I was first introduced to American Sign Language in 6th grade when my teacher did a section on sign language. From that point on I was hooked; I wanted to learn more and understand the deaf world around me. Being able to attend deaf events encouraged me to continue with my passion.
In 2009 I discovered that Pierce College offered ASL courses and that Seattle Central University offered an interpreters program. I started going through the program and was very excited to learn and be part of the deaf community. In 2010, the SCC program shut down. However, I now knew that I could do something with my skills. I graduated from Northwest University in 2012 with my General Studies Degree specializing in Ministry Leadership and American Sign Language. Since that time, I have been able to use my skills at my job and everyday life. I discovered My Smart Hands a few years ago and recently decided that this was the place for me. I’ve done private tutoring in ASL and continually use the language throughout my workday. I’m excited to teach families and help them be able to communicate better with their little ones, and bring the gift of ASL to their lives. I look forward to helping families and being a resource to the community.
Other interests of mine include travel – I’ve been to more than 10 countries (with the hopes of going to many more), running (a new found interest), wine tasting, watching Netflix with my cat, and summer festivals!
